Meme Coins Die Fast: What 34,988 Tokens Reveal About Survival in the Trenches

Meme-coin traders spend enormous amounts of time searching for the next breakout.

They monitor new pairs, holder growth, social activity, developer wallets, trading volume and rapidly changing market capitalizations. The goal is usually to get in before everyone else.

But new research suggests traders should begin with a different question:

Will this token still be trading tomorrow?

The MemeChain research project assembled data on 34,988 meme coins across Ethereum, Solana, Base and BNB Smart Chain. It combined blockchain activity with websites, social-media profiles, token images and archived website code.

The findings reveal an ecosystem defined by extreme speed, minimal commitment and rapid abandonment.

Of the 31,797 valid tokens included in its lifecycle analysis, 1,801 stopped recording transactions within 24 hours. The paper calls these “One-Day Meme Coins.” Another 3,512 survived no longer than seven days, while 4,939 lasted 30 days or less. Not every dead token was necessarily a rug pull. Some may simply have failed to attract attention. But for traders, the financial result can look remarkably similar: collapsing volume, disappearing liquidity and no practical way to exit without taking a severe loss.

The lesson is not that every new meme coin should be avoided.

It is that survival itself should be treated as a signal.

The Meme-Coin Factory Has Almost No Barrier to Entry

Creating a token used to require at least some technical ability. Launch platforms and automated tools have largely removed that barrier.

Today, someone can choose a name, upload an image, issue a token and create a trading pool within minutes. That has democratized experimentation—but it has also industrialized low-effort launches.

A creator no longer needs to build a product, write meaningful documentation or develop an original brand. They may only need a viral phrase, a copied image and enough initial liquidity to attract trading bots.

This creates a brutal attention economy. Thousands of tokens compete for the same speculative capital, and most never develop enough identity, community or liquidity to survive.

The researchers found that only 43.14% of the tokens in the full dataset had a retrievable logo. Meanwhile, many projects either lacked a dedicated website or linked to Telegram, X, token-creation platforms, analytics services and unrelated pages instead of maintaining their own web presence.

A token can still succeed without a traditional website. Some communities live almost entirely on X or Telegram. But when a project has no original visual identity, no functioning destination, no active community and no visible commitment from its creator, the probability that it is merely disposable rises dramatically.

A Website Is Not Proof—but Its Absence Still Matters

Approximately 74.8% of the analyzed tokens claimed to have a website. That initially sounds encouraging.

The deeper analysis was much less reassuring.

After removing social-media links, crypto services and pages that were not genuinely dedicated project websites, researchers identified 21,113 potential websites. Only 10,722 were reachable through a basic connection test, and just 6,766 returned a proper HTTP 200 response.

A polished website does not prove honesty. Scammers can create excellent landing pages, invent roadmaps and fabricate partnerships. AI has made professional-looking design cheaper than ever.

But the website still offers useful forensic evidence.

A trader can ask:

  • Is it a dedicated domain or a generic free page?
  • Does the site contain original content?
  • Does the contract address match the token being traded?
  • Are the social links functional?
  • Was the site created for this project or recycled?
  • Does another token use the same design, copy or domain?
  • Does the site make claims contradicted by on-chain data?
  • Does it ask users to connect a wallet unnecessarily?

The correct conclusion is not “website equals safe.”

It is “website quality and consistency contribute to a broader commitment score.”

Social Links Are Cheap Signals

The dataset found that Telegram was associated with 80.85% of projects and X with 68.67%. Discord was much less common.

Those numbers demonstrate that having a social profile is not a meaningful filter by itself. Creating an X account or Telegram group takes minutes. Followers, comments and views can also be purchased or automated.

What matters is the behavior behind the account.

A credible community usually shows some combination of:

  • Conversation between different participants
  • Posts published before and after launch
  • Replies that address genuine questions
  • Consistent branding across platforms
  • A recognizable narrative
  • Continued activity when price declines
  • Community members creating their own content
  • Developers communicating without relying exclusively on hype

A suspicious community often looks active at first glance but empty on closer inspection. The group may contain thousands of members while only a few accounts post. Messages may repeat the same slogans. Replies may avoid questions about liquidity, supply concentration or developer wallets.

Follower count measures reach. It does not prove commitment.

Turning the Research Into MemeScope Filters

The MemeChain data does not provide a finished profitable trading system. It provides evidence that on-chain activity should be evaluated alongside off-chain effort and persistence.

MemeScope can turn that principle into a practical screening framework.

Filter 1: Minimum Trading History

Tokens that have existed for only a few minutes carry the highest uncertainty.

Suggested settings:

  • Maximum risk: under 30 minutes
  • Very high risk: under two hours
  • High risk: under 24 hours
  • Survival confirmed: active beyond 24 hours
  • Stronger persistence: active beyond seven days

This does not mean waiting 24 hours will produce the greatest return. It means the token has passed the exact period in which the study identified 1,801 rapid failures.

Traders seeking the earliest entries can still participate, but the position size should reflect the much higher mortality risk.

Filter 2: Real Liquidity, Not Market Cap Alone

Market capitalization can look impressive while available liquidity remains dangerously thin.

A token should be screened for:

  • Minimum liquidity
  • Liquidity relative to market capitalization
  • Whether liquidity is locked or burned
  • Size of the largest liquidity withdrawal
  • Pool age
  • Sudden liquidity changes
  • Ability to execute both buys and sells

A token with a $2 million displayed market cap and $20,000 of liquidity is not truly a $2 million market. It is a thin pool carrying a large theoretical valuation.

For highly speculative new launches, MemeScope could flag liquidity below $25,000 as extreme risk, $25,000–$50,000 as high risk and stronger pools above that range for further review. The exact thresholds should be adjusted by chain, token age and trading style.

Filter 3: Holder Distribution

A growing holder count is useful only if the supply is not controlled by a small connected group.

Flag tokens when:

  • The developer controls an excessive percentage
  • The top 10 wallets hold most circulating supply
  • Several top wallets were funded by the same source
  • Bundled wallets purchased at launch
  • New wallets hold suspiciously similar amounts
  • Creator-linked wallets begin distributing tokens
  • A small cluster generates most trading volume

For a fast momentum trade, concentration might be tolerated temporarily. For a possible long-term hold, it becomes a serious structural weakness.

Filter 4: Transaction Quality

Volume is easy to display and sometimes easy to manufacture.

MemeScope should distinguish between:

  • Unique buyers and repeated transactions
  • Organic wallet growth and bot activity
  • Balanced buying and selling
  • Many small trades and a few dominant wallets
  • Sustained activity and one short launch burst
  • New capital and recycling among related wallets

The MemeChain study notes that half of its one-day coins recorded at least seven transactions, while 10% recorded more than 68 before going inactive. Transaction count alone clearly did not guarantee survival.

The more useful question is whether the number and diversity of active traders are expanding.

Filter 5: Original Branding

Missing or copied visual identity should increase the risk score.

Flag projects with:

  • No token image
  • A copied or low-resolution logo
  • Branding taken from an existing project
  • Inconsistent names across the website and socials
  • Multiple tokens using the same domain
  • AI-generated material with no coherent character or story
  • A website template reused across unrelated launches

Strong branding cannot prevent a rug pull, but original creative effort is harder to discard than a token assembled from stolen assets in five minutes.

Filter 6: Functional Digital Footprint

MemeScope should verify rather than merely display links.

A stronger project has:

  • A reachable website
  • A dedicated domain
  • Secure HTTPS
  • Matching contract information
  • Working X and Telegram links
  • Consistent branding
  • Original project copy
  • A domain that does not redirect elsewhere

Risk increases when a “website” sends visitors to a launchpad, generic link page, unrelated political page or different meme coin.

Filter 7: Social Authenticity

Suggested checks include:

  • Account age
  • Posting history
  • Engagement-to-follower ratio
  • Number of unique participants
  • Repetitive or bot-like replies
  • Sudden follower spikes
  • Deleted earlier posts
  • Whether the community survives price weakness
  • Developer responsiveness

A social account created minutes before launch with 20,000 followers should be treated very differently from an account that developed a community over several weeks.

Filter 8: Security and Contract Behavior

Before entering, traders should also check:

  • Whether the token can be sold
  • Hidden transfer taxes
  • Mint authority
  • Freeze authority
  • Blacklist functionality
  • Modifiable fees
  • Suspicious proxy contracts
  • Ownership status
  • Liquidity control
  • Previous contracts deployed by the creator

Website-security scanners help, but the paper found that detection services missed some known risks. No single scanner should be treated as definitive.

Use a separate trading wallet with limited funds. Never connect a primary wallet containing long-term holdings to an unknown meme-coin website.

A Practical MemeScope Risk Score

Automatic rejection rules should override the score when the token appears to be a honeypot, liquidity can be removed freely, minting remains dangerously open or wallets are exposed to malicious interactions.

A high score would not mean “safe.” It would mean the project has passed more tests than the average low-effort launch.

The Study’s Important Limitations

The research should not be treated as a perfect real-time map of today’s meme-coin market.

The main data snapshot was collected in October 2024, with lifecycle activity examined into January 2025. The paper was posted in January 2026. Some chain-level comparisons are affected by different token-age distributions, and its detailed tables appear to contain an Ethereum/Solana labeling inconsistency.

The abstract reports one-day tokens as 5.15% of the complete 34,988-token dataset, while the detailed lifecycle section reports 1,801 as 5.66% of the 31,797 tokens included in that specific analysis. Both percentages can describe different denominators, but traders should understand why they differ.

Most importantly, inactivity is not proof of fraud. A token can die because it failed, was abandoned or never found a market. The research identifies risk patterns—not guilt.

Survival Is the First Edge

Meme-coin traders are usually attracted to speed. The early buyer captures the largest potential multiple.

But the earliest buyer also accepts the least information.

The MemeChain findings suggest that a better system should not merely search for tokens rising fastest. It should search for projects demonstrating the earliest signs that they may continue to exist.

That means combining price and volume with:

  • Real liquidity
  • Distributed ownership
  • Diverse transactions
  • Functional infrastructure
  • Original branding
  • Authentic community activity
  • Safe contract behavior
  • Evidence of persistence

The next great meme coin may begin as a joke. It should not look like it was built to disappear.
